Details of the $6 Billion Heist
The 2016 Bitfinex hack remains one of the largest in cryptocurrency history, with 119,754 Bitcoins stolen. Lichtenstein used his skills in cybercrime to steal the funds, and Morgan helped him launder the money.
The couple used various methods to hide the stolen crypto, including using mixing services and darknet markets. They also bought things like non-fungible tokens (NFTs), gold, and Walmart gift cards to help disguise the money.
Lichtenstein’s Cooperation
Prosecutors aren’t asking for the maximum sentence for Lichtenstein, as they acknowledged his cooperation in other criminal investigations. For example, he testified against the operators of Bitcoin Fog, a cryptocurrency mixing service.
Despite his assistance, U.S. authorities are pushing for a long prison sentence, given the scale of the crime. They also hope it will serve as a warning to other would-be hackers. Morgan will be sentenced in November, alongside her husband.
