Interpol’s Intervention

On March 7th, South Korea’s police agency sent a letter to Interpol, seeking assistance in extraditing Kwon for securities fraud. Officer Lee Yong-sang shared that the Ministry of Justiceโ€™s International Criminal Division and the National Police Agency are actively working together, using international channels for cooperation. Despite their efforts, the agency is currently waiting for Interpol’s response.

A Twist in the Tale

Recent setbacks occurred as the Montenegrin court nullified Kwon’s U.S. extradition order, prompted by Kwon’s defense, raising doubts about its validity. The defense argued that misinformation about the sequence of extradition requests between the U.S. and South Korea influenced the court’s initial decision.

Meanwhile, Kwon faces charges, including securities fraud, connected to the Terra ecosystem’s collapse in May 2022, causing significant financial losses for investors.

Prior Troubles Surface

Even before Kwon’s arrest in September 2022, South Korean authorities had requested Interpol’s “red notice.” A previous report confirmed that Interpol issued a Red Notice for Do Kwon, intensifying the search for his arrest.

Last March, Montenegro police arrested Kwon at Podgorica airport, revealing forged passports, including Costa Rican and Belgian documents. This led to formal charges, setting the stage for legal proceedings in a Podgorica court.

This extradition saga underscores the complexities of international legal proceedings and the challenges posed by cross-border criminal investigations. South Korea’s persistent pursuit of justice for the Terra ecosystem’s collapse highlights the intricate web of global efforts against financial crimes.
