Pi Network’s News: June 2 Deadline Set for the Next Big Upgrade

The Pi Network Core Team has set June 2, 2026, as the deadline for all mainnet node operators to upgrade to Protocol 24.1, marking another important step in the network’s long-term roadmap.

The update comes shortly after the successful rollout of Protocol 23. It is part of Pi’s gradual progression toward the much-anticipated Protocol 26, which many community members believe could unlock major improvements for smart contracts and ecosystem growth.

What’s Changing With Protocol 24.1?

This upgrade is less about flashy new features and more about strengthening the network behind the scenes.

According to the Pi Core Team, Protocol 24.1 focuses on:

  • Improving ledger efficiency
  • Enhancing node synchronization
  • Preparing the backend infrastructure for future smart contracts
  • Streamlining future network upgrades

The team stressed that all nodes must complete the upgrade before June 2 to remain connected to the Pi Mainnet.

Good News: This Upgrade Should Be Smooth

Unlike the challenging Protocol 23 migration, which required major database changes, the jump to Protocol 24.1 is expected to be much simpler.

Key highlights include:

  • Most migrations should take less than 5 minutes
  • Windows nodes update automatically through Pi Desktop
  • Linux operators can use the new Pi Linux Node CLI tool
  • Docker users simply need to deploy the updated container version

The Core Team also advised operators not to upgrade all nodes simultaneously, but to route traffic through backup nodes or Pi’s official API during the upgrade process.

The Community Is Already Looking Ahead

While Protocol 24.1 is mainly an infrastructure upgrade, many Pioneers are focused on what comes next.

Popular Pi community account FireSide highlighted that moving the node system toward Pi RPC and eventually reaching Protocol 26 could significantly improve smart contract development and boost community participation.

The discussion has gained momentum because many users see Protocol 26 as a major milestone for Pi’s long-term ecosystem plans.

Pioneers Keep Holding Despite Delays

Despite delays surrounding PiDex and smart contract launches, community sentiment remains relatively resilient. The Pi Core Team has clarified that blockchain protocol upgrades and ecosystem product rollouts follow separate timelines, meaning smart contracts will not automatically arrive with Protocol 24.1. Instead, the current focus is on strengthening the network’s infrastructure ahead of larger ecosystem expansions.

As the June 2 deadline approaches, many long-term Pioneers continue holding their Pi tokens, viewing the upgrade as another important step toward Pi Network’s next phase of development.
