Crypto Exchange Spot Volume Jumps 36.5% to $696.7B in September

Story Highlights
  • Spot trading volume across 14 major exchanges climbed 36.5% to $696.7 billion in September.

  • Binance led with $307.8 billion in volume and a 44.2% market share.

  • Meanwhile, Uniswap rose 88.9%, while the top three exchanges' combined share fell from 64.8% to 62.4%.

Crypto exchange spot volume came roaring back in September, climbing 36.5% month over month to $696.7 billion across 14 major exchanges. The August total was $510.4 billion. According to WuBlockchain data, every exchange on the list posted growth. That’s a broad-based rebound, although the biggest platforms still command a hefty chunk of the market.

Crypto Exchange Spot Volume Surges Across Platforms

The September increase wasn’t limited to one or two exchanges. All 14 recorded higher spot trading volumes, suggesting activity strengthened across both centralized platforms and decentralized trading.

Uniswap posted the sharpest increase among the listed exchanges, with volume rising 88.9% to $37.6 billion. Upbit wasn’t far behind, climbing 81.6% to $19.0 billion. Bitfinex also recorded a notable jump of 112.5%, reaching $13.8 billion.

Those gains stand out, but percentage growth doesn’t automatically translate into market leadership. Starting volumes matter, too.

Binance Keeps Its Lead as Rivals Gain Ground

Binance remained the heavyweight, generating $307.8 billion in September spot volume, equivalent to a 44.2% market share. That’s a commanding lead over OKX, which recorded $65.8 billion, and Coinbase, at $61.3 billion.

Together, the three largest exchanges accounted for 62.4% of total volume. However, that combined share was down from 64.8% in August. The leaders still dominate, but their grip loosened as other platforms grew faster.

Coinbase’s volume increased 49.8% month over month, while OKX gained 40.3%. Both outpaced the overall market’s 36.5% growth rate.

Does September Signal a Broader Trading Recovery?

The data points show a clear rebound in spot trading activity, but they don’t explain what drove it or whether the momentum will last. One month of growth isn’t proof of a sustained trend.

Still, September’s numbers deliver a clear message: crypto exchange spot volume rose sharply, while Binance retained the top spot and competitors gained share. Whether that broader activity continues into October remains to be seen.
