He blamed other countries for offering financial incentives to attract U.S. filmmakers and studios overseas, leaving Hollywood and other parts of the country struggling.
Concerns Over Foreign Control of the Movie Industry
In his message, Trump described this situation as a national security threat, claiming itโs not just about business, but also about messaging and propaganda.
โThe Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death,โ Trump said. โOther countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away. Hollywood and other areas within the U.S.A. are being devastated.โ
Trump believes this is a coordinated effort by other nations to weaken the U.S. film industry. In response, he announced that heโs authorizing the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to start the process of imposing a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States.
โWe want movies made in America again,โ Trump declared.
This proposed move is aimed at protecting American jobs, preserving the countryโs cultural influence, and keeping U.S. film production within its borders. Trump has made it clear he wants to rebuild the nationโs entertainment industry and stop relying on foreign-made films.
This latest move has left social media users confused. One user asked, โI thought tariffs only applied to physical goods shipped into the country. How would they even be applied/collected on movies?โ If approved, this would mark one of the most aggressive actions taken by a U.S. leader against international film imports in modern history.
