California Meme Coin Bill Clears Legislature

California’s AB 2409, a bill restricting public officials’ involvement in meme coins, has passed both the state Assembly and Senate and now awaits Governor’s approval.

The legislation would prohibit public officers and employees from issuing meme coins and would bar listing meme coins for purchase by California residents starting January 1, 2027, unless offered by a federal or state official as specified. The bill would also authorize the Attorney General, district attorneys, city attorneys, or county counsel to enforce these prohibitions through civil action.

The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk for signature.
