Crypto Regulation News: Brazil Sets 24-Hour Delay for $10,000+ Transfers

Brazil is introducing tougher controls on large cryptocurrency transfers as regulators seek to prevent fraudsters from quickly moving illicit funds. The Central Bank of Brazil said certain crypto transfers above $10,000 will face a delay of up to 24 hours under new anti-fraud rules.

The measure will take effect in 2027 and applies to transfers sent to foreign virtual asset firms and self-custody wallets. The $10,000 threshold can be reached through a single transaction or through the combined value of a customer’s transfers during the same day.

Why the Central Bank Is Acting

The central bank said the move reflects the growing use of virtual assets, including stablecoins, to quickly move money obtained through financial scams.

The temporary delay is designed to give exchanges and financial institutions more time to review suspicious transactions before funds can be moved further. The same type of delay may also apply to other transactions that require closer checks under risk-management policies.

Not a Permanent Freeze

The central bank stressed that the measure is not an asset freeze or a permanent block on transfers.

Instead, the delay creates additional time for compliance teams to examine transactions. Transfers below $10,000 will not automatically face this specific requirement.

For example, a $15,000 crypto transfer to an overseas virtual asset company or self-custody wallet could take up to 24 hours to clear.

Exchanges Must Strengthen Monitoring

Brazilian crypto exchanges and virtual asset service providers will need to upgrade their monitoring systems before the rules begin.

Platforms will have to identify transfers above the threshold and track a customer’s total daily transfer volume, rather than examining transactions separately.

Part of Brazil’s Wider Crypto Frame

Brazil has been working progressively on its digital asset framework since 2023, when it established rules requiring cryptocurrency exchanges and service providers to register with the central bank.

The latest measure adds another layer of oversight to cross-border crypto transfers, particularly as regulators focus on the speed with which digital assets and stablecoins can move money across borders.

The 2027 implementation gives crypto businesses time to update their systems and prepare for the new requirements. For users, the main impact will be slower processing for certain large transfers, while regulators will gain an additional window to identify potential fraud before funds move further.
