Exxon Mobil Stock Hits 52-Week High: Is XOM Still a Buy?

Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) shares climbed to a 52-week high as geopolitical tensions and concerns over global oil supplies supported energy stocks. The rally has strengthened the outlook for the U.S. oil major, but investors face a critical question: how much upside remains after the recent advance? With crude prices volatile and the company’s next earnings report approaching, Exxon Mobil stock is now at a crucial point, raising the question of whether XOM stock price can extend its rally or if investors should expect a pullback.

Why Is Exxon Mobil Stock Rising?

Exxon Mobil shares rose 1.68% to close at $177.01 on October 14, after reaching an intraday high of $177.43. The move extended the stock’s gains for a fifth consecutive session, reflecting renewed buying interest in the energy sector.

Higher crude prices and concerns about supply disruptions have supported energy stocks. Recent attacks affecting Middle Eastern energy infrastructure and shipping routes have increased uncertainty over global oil flows, strengthening the market’s focus on producers with large-scale operations and established cash-generation capacity.

Exxon has also received support from improving earnings expectations. Zacks upgraded the stock to a Buy rating, while analyst estimates for the company’s 2026 earnings have increased. However, the broader analyst consensus remains more cautious, highlighting the risk that the share price has advanced ahead of expectations for future earnings.

Can Higher Oil Prices Support Exxon’s Earnings?

Oil prices remain a key driver of Exxon’s financial performance. Higher crude prices can improve upstream earnings and cash generation, although refining margins, commodity-price movements and operating costs also influence overall results.

Investors will be watching whether the current supply risks translate into sustained higher prices or whether crude retreats as market conditions change. A prolonged period of elevated prices could support Exxon’s earnings outlook, while a sharp reversal could reduce the financial benefits of the recent rally.

The company’s next quarterly results will provide a clearer view of how commodity prices and operating performance are affecting profitability. Exxon is scheduled to report its third-quarter 2026 results on October 30, according to the current earnings calendar.

Exxon Mobil Stock Price Analysis: XOM Tests the $177 Breakout

Exxon shares have moved above the $176.41 barrier, while the latest session’s high of $177.43 established a new 52-week peak. The stock’s close at $177.01 indicates that buyers maintained most of the session’s gains.  The $176–$177 area is now an important reference zone. Holding above this region could help sustain bullish momentum, while a move back below the breakout level would raise questions about the strength of the rally.

On the upside, a sustained move beyond $177.43 would establish a fresh high and put further price discovery in focus.  A reversal in crude prices or a deterioration in energy-sector sentiment could weaken the breakout. Traders will therefore watch whether XOM can maintain its gains rather than relying solely on the new high as a bullish signal.

Is XOM Still a Buy?

Exxon Mobil’s outlook remains closely tied to crude prices, supply disruptions and its ability to translate favorable market conditions into earnings and cash flow. Its recent rally reflects stronger investor interest, but the new high also raises the stakes for the upcoming earnings report.

For investors, the key test is whether Exxon can support its valuation with stronger earnings and cash generation. The upcoming results and the direction of oil prices will help determine whether XOM’s breakout has room to extend or whether the rally is becoming vulnerable to a correction.
