Strategy has long been known for one thing, raising capital and buying more Bitcoin. But that playbook is starting to evolve. During its Q2 earnings call, the company confirmed it will no longer dedicate every dollar of new capital to Bitcoin purchases.
Instead, future fundraising will be split between buying BTC and strengthening its USD reserve. The split will depend on market conditions. The update has triggered fresh debate over whether Strategy is simply becoming more flexible. Alternatively, some ask whether its Bitcoin-first strategy is entering a new phase.
The announcement comes after Strategy went three consecutive weeks without purchasing Bitcoin. Between July 20 and July 26, the company’s holdings remained unchanged at 843,775 BTC. This makes it the world’s largest institutional Bitcoin holder.
Those holdings were acquired at a total cost of $63.69 billion, with an average purchase price of $75,476 per Bitcoin. At current market prices, the treasury is valued at around $54.77 billion.
Instead of buying more BTC, Strategy sold 5.42 million Class A shares, raising $544.5 million. This helped increase its USD reserve to $3.75 billion. That amount is enough to cover preferred dividends and interest payments for more than 2.1 years.
Management said future Bitcoin sales may also be used when necessary to:
The company also confirmed it is not considering Bitcoin-backed borrowing, citing counterparty and margin risks.
Alongside this shift, Strategy has already sold about $218.4 million worth of Bitcoin in 2026 under its newly established BTC Monetization Program. These sales help fund part of its preferred dividend obligations.
Rather than adding Bitcoin, Strategy recently spent $25 million repurchasing 288,930 STRC preferred shares at an average price of $86.53. This represents roughly a 13% discount to their $100 par value.
CEO Phong Le said buying discounted STRC reduces future preferred dividend obligations, making it an attractive use of capital. Around $975 million still remains under the company’s $1 billion STRC repurchase program. Meanwhile, the board plans to maintain STRC’s 12% dividend until the preferred shares consistently trade close to $100.
The strategy shift has drawn mixed reactions across the crypto community.
Crypto analyst Ted Pillows questioned why Strategy would reduce Bitcoin purchases when BTC is trading well below its all-time high. He asked why the company isn’t taking advantage of lower prices.
Meanwhile, another analyst warned that the buying pause could be interpreted as stress within Strategy’s treasury model. He said if investors begin viewing the pause as a sign of weakening confidence, MSTR shares could face another sharp decline.
Despite the changes, Strategy continues to report strong digital capital growth in 2026. The company has raised $17.06 billion through ATM programs this year. It achieved a 4.5% BTC Yield. It also increased its Bitcoin holdings by 25% year-to-date.
While Bitcoin remains central to its business, Strategy is now balancing accumulation with liquidity management. This signals a more flexible treasury approach than investors have seen in previous years.
