Ripple’s RLUSD Pilot Offers New Hope for Drought-Hit Pastoralists in Kenya

In the 5th iteration of the Diva campaign, it is anticipated to provide cash transfers to pastoral communities in Kenya ahead of the drought through digital currencies. The campaign partnered with Ripple to utilize its new stablecoin, RLUSD concluded successfully. It impacted 517 pastoralists, with a notable proportion of 70% being women, highlighting a strong focus on gender inclusion. 

Ripple Pilots Drought Insurance in Kenya

The Diva Donate Campaign partnership was initially announced in March and has now concluded successfully. The pastoralists in Laikipia North, a constituency in Kenya, utilized Ripple’s stablecoin RLUSD and Ethereum for coverage and potential payouts, demonstrating their applicability in humanitarian aid and disaster relief. 

Ripple posted their success on X by stating– 

“The Ripple Impact drought insurance pilot in Kenya concluded, successfully insuring 517 pastoralists (70% women) using $RLUSD. Satellite data showed favorable vegetation during the pilot period, so no payout was triggered.”

In the past decade, Kenya has experienced severe droughts, which have destroyed pastoralists’ livestock and put the pastoral communities at risk of starvation. But this year, with Ripple’s collaboration with Diva Campaign, this hazard was successfully avoided.

Satellite data was used to monitor vegetation health, serving as an objective insurance payout for Kenyan pastoralists. During the Ripple RLUSD pilot period, a favorable vegetation condition was noted that prevented the potential drought. 

This Ripple tryout provided peace of mind and risk protection for pastoralists, encouraging investments in their livelihood. It also encouraged broader adoption, which will likely expand to Africa and other climate-vulnerable regions. 

Blockchain Technology Potentially Provides Financial Resilience During Natural Disaster

For the next high-risk drought season in Kenya (October to December 2025), 517 pastoralists remain insured and protected with the unused RLUSD. This data demonstrates that innovative blockchain-based insurance solutions can protect pastoralists from climate risks without complex claims processes.
