Ripple News: Canary Capital CEO Says XRP Will Win the Race for Financial Rails

Canary Capital CEO Steven McClurg said he expects XRP to emerge as the leading protocol for institutional financial infrastructure, pointing to newly announced lending plans on the XRP Ledger and a sharp rise in South Korean trading activity as supporting evidence.

Institutional Lending Called a Major Catalyst

Speaking on the topic of institutional-grade credit coming to the XRP Ledger through a partnership involving Cicada Credit and Clearpool, McClurg said the development could have an outsized impact on XRP. “I think it’s going to be massive,” he said, describing institutional lending as a meaningful expansion beyond activity the network has already seen.

Centralization as a Feature, Not a Flaw

McClurg addressed a common criticism of XRP, its relatively centralized structure compared with other blockchain protocols, arguing that this characteristic works in XRP’s favor for institutional use cases. “Institutional investors are going to prefer more centralized platforms,” he said, contrasting that preference with retail investors who tend to favor more decentralized alternatives. He said the XRP Ledger’s ability to generate yield would help attract additional capital as financial infrastructure gets rebuilt around blockchain rails.

South Korea Emerges as a Key Market

McClurg highlighted a 273% surge in XRP trading volume on South Korean exchange Upbit since March. He attributed the country’s outsized trading activity partly to population size and the strength of the Korean won as a crypto trading pair, saying that South Korea and the United States represent the two largest markets for XRP by currency pair volume.

He said XRP has become the clear leading protocol in the South Korean market, contrasting it with Ethereum’s stronger position in markets like the United States and Canada.
