XRP News Today : Ripple Expands XRP Ledger for AI Payments With New Starter Kit Update

Ripple, a blockchain-based payment network, has released its updated Version 1.1 of its XRP Ledger (XRPL) AI Starter Kit, adding support for Stripe and Tempo’s Machine Payments Protocol (MPP).

The update allows AI agents to make automatic payments for APIs, data, and computing services using XRP, RLUSD, and other supported tokens.

Ripple Adds Support for Stripe and Tempo’s AI Payment Standard

On 17 September, RippleX developer teams made an update in Version 1.1 to support the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open payment standard developed by Stripe and Tempo for machine-to-machine payments.

With MPP, an AI agent can request a service such as data or an API. The service then sends a “402 Payment Required” message showing the payment needed.

The agent can then approve the payment and receive the requested data or service without creating an account or going through a checkout page. XRPL now works as a settlement network for these payments.

RippleX Head of Product Jazzi Cooper said,

“Our job is to make XRP and RLUSD first-class options wherever developers are building.”

How AI Payments Actually Work on the XRPL

The new system supports two main ways for AI agents to make payments.

For single payments, an AI agent can pay using XRP, issued tokens, or supported multi-purpose tokens. The payment can settle in three to five seconds with fees below one cent. Once the transaction is confirmed, the agent can receive the requested service.

For session payments, the agent can open an XRPL payment channel and make many small payments while using a service. Instead of recording every payment on the blockchain, the agent signs payment vouchers off-chain as it uses the service.

These vouchers can be signed at more than 100,000 per second. The service provider can then settle the total amount with only two on-chain transactions: one to open the payment channel and one to close it.

Support for IOUs and multi-purpose tokens in payment channels is also being added through XLS-93d. This could allow RLUSD-based payments to use the same system in the future.

Open Wallet Standard Adds More Control

Ripple has also added support for the Open Wallet Standard (OWS). The system gives AI agents access to wallets through a common interface across different blockchains without exposing private keys directly.

It can also apply controls such as spending limits and approved wallet addresses. This gives developers more control over how an AI agent can spend funds.

Ripple Targets the Growing AI Economy

The new update is part of Ripple’s push to make the XRPL a payment layer for AI agents that can complete transactions without human involvement.

Ripple previously added support for the x402 web payment standard in June. With MPP support, the company is now connecting XRP and RLUSD with another payment system designed for machine-to-machine commerce.

The XRPL AI Starter Kit remains in beta, with no named users yet.
