Raoul Pal has built a reputation for identifying macro trades before they become consensus. The former Goldman Sachs hedge fund manager and Real Vision founder is now making the case that the next crypto opportunity is not in the assets currently dominating market attention. It is in the infrastructure layer most retail investors have never seriously considered.
Global Liquidity Case
Pal’s entire investment framework anchors to one variable: global liquidity. He tracks the combined balance sheets of major central banks, G20 money supply and foreign exchange reserves as a single aggregate measure of how much capital is available to flow into risk assets.
His historical analysis shows Bitcoin’s price has tracked this global liquidity measure with approximately 90% correlation over the past decade. When central banks expand, money eventually reaches the most speculative end of the risk spectrum. Crypto, as the highest-beta asset class available, receives a disproportionate share of that flow.
His current read is that global liquidity is entering a new expansion phase. Central banks outside the United States are already easing. The macro backdrop, whatever the Federal Reserve decides at this week’s FOMC meeting, is trending toward more liquidity rather than less.
Where the 100x Actually Lives
The specific trade Pal is describing is not Bitcoin doubling from here. It is a bet on what he calls the infrastructure layer sitting between base blockchains and end-user applications, layer two networks, decentralised physical infrastructure projects, and application-specific chains that are the least owned by institutions and the most misunderstood by mainstream investors.
His framework describes a rotation sequence that has repeated across every prior cycle. Bitcoin moves first, pulling institutional capital into the space. Ethereum and large-cap altcoins follow. Then capital rotates into smaller infrastructure assets that have been largely ignored during the bear market. That final rotation has historically produced the most extreme percentage returns precisely because so little capital was positioned there beforehand.
Why the Timing Matters Now
Multiple on-chain signals are converging simultaneously. Long-term holder accumulation has hit a six-year high. Bitcoin exchange reserves have fallen $23 billion in 90 days. The LTH/STH Realized Cap Ratio is approaching the level that has marked major cycle bottoms twice before.
The current moment, in his reading, could turn into something big.
