Pi Network Warns Node Operators: Upgrade Now or Lose Network Connection

Pi Network issued a reminder on Wednesday urging Mainnet node operators who have not yet upgraded to Protocol v25 to do so as soon as possible to remain connected to the network.

According to the Pi Core Team, the majority of Mainnet node operators have already completed the upgrade. The process is described as straightforward and should take only a few minutes to complete, consistent with previous protocol upgrades on the network.

How Pi Nodes Work

Pi Network nodes run on a consensus algorithm based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol rather than the proof-of-work model used by Bitcoin and Ethereum. Nodes form trusted groups called quorum slices and reach agreement on transactions based on a global trust graph built from security circles, the mutual trust connections established by Pi’s mobile users.

Node software runs on desktop and laptop computers rather than mobile phones. There are three levels of participation: Computer App, which offers a desktop interface for checking balances and chatting without running blockchain validation; Node, which verifies blockchain validity and submits transactions after passing a selection process; and SuperNode, which forms the backbone of the network and is responsible for reaching consensus, requiring 24/7 uptime and a stable internet connection.

Selection for Node and SuperNode roles is based on criteria including uptime, internet connection quality, processor and memory capacity, prior community contributions, and trust scores derived from security circles. Selected applicants are required to complete KYC verification before being enrolled to serve on the network.

What Operators Need to Do

Pi Network has not indicated a deadline for the v25 upgrade but has advised operators to complete it promptly to avoid disconnection from the network. Further technical details on the upgrade process were shared in the official announcement.
