Ghibli-Themed Meme Coins Surge as ChatGPT-4o Reveals New Anime Feature

A new feature in ChatGPT-4o, which allows users to turn regular images into Ghibli-style anime, has sparked a wave of excitement. This has led to the rise of Ghibli-themed meme coins, with one Solana-based token reaching a market cap of $23 million—an incredible 52.54% increase in just one hour.

But will this trend last?

Studio Ghibli’s Influence Reaches Web3

Studio Ghibli, founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, is one of Japan’s most celebrated animation studios. Known for masterpieces like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Princess Mononoke, Ghibli has a passionate global fanbase. Now, that influence is extending into the world of cryptocurrency.

ChatGPT-4o Introduces Ghibli-Style AI Images

On March 25, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared on X:

“We are launching a new thing today—images in ChatGPT!”

The feature, which lets users create Ghibli-style anime from photos, quickly took over social media. Many users updated their profile pictures with AI-generated avatars, including a16z founder Evan Shaw.

The excitement didn’t stop at AI-generated images—crypto traders jumped in too. Several Ghibli-themed meme coins appeared, with a Solana-based token leading the pack. Reports show it hit a market cap of over $23 million within an hour, surging by 52.54%.

With Studio Ghibli’s loyal fanbase, the rise of these tokens is pulling even more people into the Web3 space.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the buzz, two major risks could affect Ghibli-themed meme coins:

  1. Copyright Issues: Studio Ghibli is known for strictly protecting its brand. If the company takes legal action, these coins could disappear just as quickly as they appeared.
  2. Market Uncertainty: Meme coins are known for their rapid rises and falls. While Ghibli-themed tokens are booming now, there’s no guarantee they’ll hold their value once the hype fades.

For now, the mix of AI, anime, and cryptocurrency is creating a fascinating trend. Whether Ghibli-themed meme coins will last or vanish remains to be seen.
