El Salvador is making waves in the world of Bitcoin by pioneering a groundbreaking approach to mining, powered by renewable energy from the Tecapa volcano. Led by President Nayib Bukele, an ardent supporter of Bitcoin, the country has been steadily increasing its Bitcoin reserves since 2021.
An extremely impressive move, right? Here’s everything you should know about it.
With a focus on sustainability, El Salvador has installed 300 processors at a state-owned power plant near the Tecapa volcano. These processors utilize geothermal energy for Bitcoin mining, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly cryptocurrency practices.
“Since September 2021, these efforts have successfully mined about 473.5 Bitcoins, leveraging a minimal share of 1.5 megawatts from the 102 megawatts generated.”
El-Salvadorian government’s Bitcoin Office reported
El Salvador has set a global precedent in the search for sustainable and responsible mining practices by integrating geothermal energy with Bitcoin mining.
Using geothermal energy, a renewable and sustainable power source, in mining operations has significantly reduced the environmental footprint – at least when compared to the traditional way of doing the same thing.
The Bitcoin Office drew out the importance of this move while speaking with Reuters.
“This venture not only strengthens our financial assets but also aligns with our national energy and environmental policies,”
This pioneering initiative has fostered collaboration among major cryptocurrency miners like Foundry USA, Ant Pool, ViaBTC, F2Pool, and Binance Pool. Together, they ensure the security of blockchain transactions originating from El Salvador’s geothermal power plant, enhancing efficiency in the process.
Despite global acclaim for its sustainable practices, El Salvador’s decision to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021 faced skepticism from international entities such as the International Monetary Fund. Nonetheless, the nation remains steadfast in its pursuit of transforming the cryptocurrency landscape while minimizing environmental impact.
El Salvador’s eco-friendly initiative of using volcanic geothermal energy to mine Bitcoins and increase its holdings, presently valued at $354 million, has set a global precedent. With a vision to integrate Bitcoin seamlessly into its economy without inviting global criticism or adding to the carbon emissions, the country is charting a course towards a more sustainable future.
Will other countries follow El Salvador’s lead? Only time will tell.
