Crypto Regulation Sparks Crime: IRS Issues Phishing Warning, Lummis Gets Hacked

Crypto hackers, thieves, and scammers tend to employ trending narratives in their malicious schemes, the latest being crypto regulation. Scammers have been spreading fake letters from the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and have hacked Senator Lummis’ X account for meme coin shilling.

IRS warns of falsified letters targeting crypto holders

On July 30, the IRS warned the crypto community regarding a new phishing tactic employing fake tax agency letters. Scammers mail counterfeit “Digital Asset Compliance” letters to crypto users to steal their personal information and digital assets. They commonly ask users to register on a lookalike IRS domain by scanning a given QR code. They also insist on an urgent deadline beyond which they threaten penalties.

Once on the site, fraudsters begin to mine personal information from unsuspecting users. Data requested includes identification information, cryptocurrency wallet or exchange account information, among others. Compiling this information allows them to impersonate users and steal their cryptocurrencies.

IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Chief Jarod Koopman commented on the matter, saying:

“Criminals continue to exploit public trust in government agencies by creating convincing fake websites and official-looking correspondence.”

Lummis gets hacked to promote USA coin

In a separate event, Senator Cynthia Lummis’ X account got compromised just hours ago. For about five minutes, it promoted the newly created Solana meme coin “USA.”

Most of the comments, however, showed a certain growth in the crypto community since they quickly flagged it as suspicious. The timing coincided with the “Bitcoin Senator’s” push for the CLARITY Act, which made it all the more awkward.

On the brighter side, the post was promptly taken down, and no losses were reported.

Prevention and Management

Once again, crypto users should perform thorough identity verification for anyone seeking their personal information. Anyone with a sense of urgency is most likely a scammer.

Additionally, users should keep their keys and wallet recovery phrases secret and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.

As far as meme coins go, users should consider out-of-the-blue promotions of brand new coins by influential accounts with a grain of salt.
