The crypto market is taking two hits at once. The $6.3 billion Binance exploit has shaken confidence, and a sharp sell-off on Wall Street has dragged risk assets lower. Bitcoin has lost its key $80,000 support and fallen to its lowest level in six weeks.
Crypto Prices Today
According to market data, the top coins are down sharply:
Bitcoin’s 24-hour trading volume has jumped to about $194 billion, a sign of heavy selling.
Reason 1: The $6.3 Billion Binance Hack
The Binance exploit is now the largest crypto hack ever in dollar terms. Bitcoin fell from about $78,700, when the first major reports appeared, to a low near $76,368 overnight. The drop pushed Bitcoin below the $80,000 support it had been defending.
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao argued the damage is smaller than the headline figure suggests. Mt. Gox lost 650,000 BTC, more than 5% of Bitcoin’s supply at the time, and nearly all its users were affected. FTX also hit almost every customer. In Binance’s case, CZ said, the exchange is covering all losses itself.
Reason 2: Wall Street’s Worst Day Since June
US stocks lost about $1.5 trillion in value in a single session, and the major indexes were heading for their worst day since June:
Bitcoin often moves with tech stocks, so the fall in the Nasdaq and chip stocks added to the pressure.
Reason 3: Key Support Gave Way
Expert Michaël van de Poppe said Bitcoin was rejected at $81,000, slid quickly toward $76,000 to close a price gap, and then failed again at $78,000. The levels he is watching:
Is This A Normal Pullback?
On-chain data from Glassnode suggests the drop may not be as damaging as it looks:
History Says Hack Crashes Can Be Short-Lived
Some invetsors compared the market reaction with past exchange disasters:
The Binance hack is far larger than either of those events, yet the drop has been about half as deep.
What Comes Next?
Bitcoin can either set a higher low or fall back toward its $58,000 cycle low. For now, the levels to watch are $75,000 to $75,800 below and $80,000 above.
