Bitcoin Could Be Hacked and Fall to Zero, Warns Chamath Palihapitiya

Billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya has warned that Bitcoin could eventually lose its value because of security risks, limited financial privacy and difficulties upgrading its technology. He believes advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing could threaten Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections.

Speaking in an interview, Palihapitiya said Bitcoin’s growth could be limited because its public transaction records expose information about wallet activity, potentially creating security risks for identified holders.

“I just think it’s capped and then I think eventually it gets hacked and then it goes to zero,” he said when asked whether Bitcoin was finished.

AI and Quantum Computing Pose Potential Risks

Palihapitiya warned that advanced AI systems could help identify weaknesses in cryptographic systems. He described a hypothetical attack targeting Bitcoin attributed to its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. An attacker could attempt to steal the coins and profit by shorting Bitcoin if the incident triggered a market decline.

Quantum computing presents a separate potential challenge because sufficiently powerful quantum computers could undermine some cryptographic methods used to secure digital assets. However, no such attack has been demonstrated against Bitcoin’s network, and the threat depends on future technological developments.

Palihapitiya said Bitcoin needs to move towards quantum-resistant cryptography but questioned whether its developer community could agree on and implement the required changes in time.

Bitcoin’s Public Transactions Could Limit Adoption

Palihapitiya argued that Bitcoin’s limited privacy could restrict its appeal to central banks and other buyers that require greater confidentiality. Although wallet addresses do not automatically reveal their owners’ identities, blockchain analysis can sometimes link transactions to identifiable individuals.

He also cited reports of kidnappings and other crimes involving cryptocurrency holders in France to illustrate the potential risks of publicly identifying asset owners.

According to Palihapitiya, these privacy and security concerns could limit Bitcoin’s potential buyer base, placing a ceiling on its long-term growth. He transferred his long-term Bitcoin investment to Digital Currency Group (DCG) in exchange for company equity. He explained that this arrangement reduced his exposure to cryptocurrency storage and security risks.
