Copper Prices Today Hit Record High Above $14,500 A Ton

Copper just notched its highest price ever, breaking past $14,530 a ton on the London Metal Exchange. The metal has now climbed over 16% since January and nearly 47% across the last twelve months. Behind the spike there are worries that Trump could widen tariffs on refined copper coming into the US, plus a wave of shipments flooding American ports that’s left other regions running short on supply. But the tariff fear is only part of the picture. Mining output has been shrinking for decades, global production now sits around 8.7 million tonnes, a fraction of what it was in the 1990s, and new mines take years to bring online even when discovered. Add rising demand from data centers, EVs, renewable energy and electrical grids, and the supply-demand math gets tighter by the month.
