Anthropic has warned that self-replicating AI agents, or “AI worms,” could soon hijack connected devices such as smart TVs, ovens and security cameras and spread across the internet without human involvement, according to the Financial Times. “We’re seeing signs of life for AI worms,” the company said, likening their potential spread to “digital slime mold.” Unlike traditional malware, such agents could identify vulnerable devices on their own, compromise them and replicate across networks. Anthropic said a fully autonomous AI worm has not yet appeared, but the individual capabilities needed are developing quickly and could combine within months.
