At the G20 Meeting, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said the IMF would prefer the regulation of crypto assets over a total ban.

According to Georgieva, separating publicly issued crypto assets and stablecoins from state-backed central bank digital currencies is the IMF's top objective.

She warns that banning cryptocurrencies could be an option if they become a significant risk to financial stability.

Georgieva believes that sensible laws with predictability and consumer protection are preferable.

Global crypto regulatory frameworks are being developed by the IMF, FSB, and BIS for release in the second half of the year.
