Porn Websites Are Now Most Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining Source

A new study exposes that cryptocurrency miners are facing towards porn websites to exploit users’ computing power when they are online.

Porn websites form 49 percent of the 241 top ranking websites with illegal cryptocurrency mining software. This is according to a  report by 360 Netlab Chinese security firm.

The websites contain a malicious code that forces a computer to mine cryptocurrency. This is when the computer user visits these sites. This eats away their computer processing power and also slows down operations. 360 Netlab used DNSMon detection system to analyze anomalies and relationships in DNS traffic.

The report adds,

“Pornographic related websites constitute the main body, accounting for 49%. Others include fraud (8%), advertising (7%), mining (7%), film and television (6%) and other categories.”

The top-ranking websites form part of the 100,000 websites ranked as best by Alexa. Also, 629 out of the top 300,000 websites have this code. These sites include “streamxxx. Tv,” basically and smut. Other sites include “legendofkorra.tv” and a proxy site for The Pirate Bay.

The users are set to benefit from the popularity of these websites.

They also say coinhive.com is the largest of the more than ten sites offering technical capacity for mining. It has 57% of the share in attacks. Coinhive recently infected BrowseAloud extension used for converting web text to audio. This aids the visually-impaired people. This crypto mining attack involved many government websites in both U.K. and Australia.

Texthelp later took the extension offline but was to resume today.

Other sites include coin-hive.com, load.jsecoin.com and webmine.pro and authedmine.com. These have less than 10 percent share.

Moreover, the report says that traditionally favorite sites that were not making money are now included. They are now making money using the visitor’s computers by forcing web mining.

“Recently some content sites have built their mining capacity so that they no longer need to share their profit with the mining sites.”

The report details the keywords for the leading websites with illegal mining code. Popular keywords are a no-brainer. They include proxy, porn, melody, tube, teen, torrent, and piratebay. Others include “mature,” film and stream.
