Coinbase In An Attempt To Seek ‘BUIDL’ Trademark

Coinbase wants to own a trademark for “BUIDL”, the cryptocurrency community used this popular term, the public records reveal.

As per the Oct 2 filling with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the San Francisco–based tech unicorn expects “BUIDL” to catch up as one among the company’s protected brand names.

According to the USPTO website, the application is assigned to an examining attorney about three months after the filing date. Another company submits, “HODL,” which is much more popular crypto misspelling to the USPTO for trademark protection. Also another application from Flashratings, Inc. may have been suspended by the end of last month.

The Google trends data for the term “BUIDL” in the past 7 days appears quite interesting. As the search interest for the term was at the peak point on 7 Dec 2018. Having New York region at the top position and then California, Washington, Virginia and Massachusetts follow simultaneously.

Raalyqt tweets that Binance CEO, Chang Peng Zhao has been using the term. Although Coinbase has never tweeted using the term “BUIDL”.

On which cz_binance replies that he believes in real building and not filing patents. Also, claims he isn’t the first person to use misspelled word “BUIDL”.

He again recursively tweets “pissed” = lawyers ready to go. Also, shares his point of view that filing one such term that various communities have widely used  may create a negative impression about one’s reputation.

This controversy on the trademark for the term “BUIDL” is quite interesting. Also, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has not yet revealed any decision regarding the trademark creation for the word “BUIDL”.
